Julia in the UK
Julia recently visited London where she spoke to Cosmo UK and headed to the ITV studios …
It’s been a whole SIXTEEN YEARS since 10 Things I Hate About Youburst onto our screens and thrust a long-haired Heath Ledger singing on the school bleachers into our lives. Sigh.
We loved watching Julia Stiles play angsty, non-comformist Kat Stratford – and as she was in London to promote her new series Blue, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to ask her aaaaalll about it…
How do you feel looking back on ‘10 Things…’ today?
I’m so grateful to have been in that movie. It was my first big break, and such a fun part. I have so many good memories from filming, but I don’t really like to watch it back. They’re still talking about it so many years later, that’s really lucky and I’m fortunate to be a part of it.
If you could imagine a home video of your seventeen-year-old self, broadcast for all the world to see, you might feel slightly uncomfortable, too. I was such a baby.
What were the most enjoyable parts of filming?
Just being teenagers away from home, making a movie over the summer, it was ridiculous. It was such a special experience because it was so raw, and we were so unfiltered, all of us in the cast. There was something innocent and pure about that time.
We’ve heard the tears at the end of your ’10 Things I Hate About You’ reading were real – were they?
They were not intentional. On some level I knew that I was supposed to be somewhat emotional, because when we did the table read I remember I just said the poem, and I could have been reciting the phone book.
But [when it came to filming] I never expected that I was going to start crying. I don’t know why I did, whether it connected to something going on at the time, or if I was just overwhelmed by the whole experience of making my first big movie.
You must be proud of how far your co-stars have come since that film?
I’m so proud of so many. Joseph Gordon Levitt is an amazing musician and what he’s done with Hitrecord is really, really interesting. David Krumholtz [who played Michael] is on a successful TV show, and Larisa Oleynik [Bianca] has blossomed into a lovely young woman. The only caveat to that is, obviously, it’s really sad what happened to Heath Ledger. It’s a little bittersweet.
You’re a proud feminist – how was it playing a character who was, in many ways, the first fictional feminist in the genre?
Kat was really angst ridden too. [Nowadays] I feel like, on the one hand obviously there’s so much to be grateful for; women can vote, can have jobs, be self-reliant. But sometimes I wonder how far we’ve come – I could wax political forever but I know I’ll get in trouble for it.
In your new project, Blue, you play a mum to a pre-teen son, who works as an accountant by day but an escort by night…
Yeah – It was a challenge for me, but a welcome challenge. As much as there’s a dark humour with the way that we show her life, it’s also really sad what she’s dealing with. Yeah, so sometimes you take that home with you.
You can watch Julia in ‘Blue’ on Lifetime TV (Freeview channel 238, Virgin Media channel 242, and Sky channel 156) from Monday 2nd March at 10pm.
The Mindy Project
Julia Stiles appears to be taking a break from the big screen and moving to the small screen! She posted a photo on Instagram Tuesday while working on the set of The Mindy Project. According to Entertainment Weekly, she has booked a guest starring role on Fox’s comedy series and will play “a friend of Danny’s (Chris Messina) who is a recovering hoarder. She will also be a love interest for Morgan (Ike Barinholtz).”
Photographed alongside her new co-star Mindy Kaling, tiles captioned the flick, “They call me Dr. Stiles… First Day! @mindykaling.”
We can’t wait to see Julia’s big cameo debut back to the small screen. Looking good, Jules!
