Beyond the luxury yacht parties and free-flowing champagne in the French Riviera, darkness lurks—at least according to a new television drama created by Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Neil Jordan.
Sky Atlantic’s Riviera , launching later in 2017, is a stylish, sun-kissed thriller that delves inside the opulent playground of wealthy elites in the south of France, with all its debauchery, double-dealing, and perhaps even murder.
Riviera stars Hollywood actor Julia Stiles as Georgina, the American wife of billionaire Constantine Clios. When Clios, played by Anthony LaPaglia, is killed in a yacht explosion just a year into their marriage, she tries to uncover the truth about his death. Georgina discovers the extent of her husband’s questionable business dealings and navigates a complex web of deceit and depravity to get to the truth of how he died.
Along with co-starring in Sky Atlantic’s upcoming drama Riviera, Adrian Lester will direct two episodes of the sun-soaked thriller. Currently filming in the south of France, Riviera is created by Neil Jordan with a cast led by Julia Stiles and Lena Olin.
Lester has already directed for the BBC series Hustle, in which he also starred. He also recently toplined the BBC mini Undercover, opposite Sophie Okonedo, which kicks off Stateside tomorrow on BBC America.
Riviera is based on an idea by Paul McGuinness and boasts a cast of morally ambiguous characters, complex relationships and audacious excess. Stiles plays Georgina, a Midwestern girl turned smart, resourceful wife of the billionaire Constantine Clios. After just a year of marriage, her immaculate new life is blown apart when her husband is killed in an explosion aboard the yacht of a Russian oligarch and arms dealer. Believing there to be more to the tragedy, she sets out to uncover what happened.
Iwan Rheon (Game Of Thrones), Dimitri Leonidas (The Monuments Men), Roxanne Duran (White Ribbon), Phil Davis (Vera Drake), Amr Waked (Lucy), and Igal Naor (The Honourable Woman) also star.
The show is due for air on Sky Atlantic in the UK next year and will also be available across Ireland, Italy, Germany and Austria.
Neil Jordan’s latest foray into TV drama sees him follow up The Borgias with another world of wealth, luxury and depravity. A still from Riviera has landed, offering a first look at its star Julia Stiles.
Fresh from another encounter with Jason Bourne in Jason Bourne, Stiles is centrepiecing the Sky Atlantic drama. She plays Georgina, a Midwesterner who was married to billionaire and art collector Constantine Clios until he was unhelpfully blown to bits on a yacht belonging to an oligarch.
This deadly deed is the catalyst for the gutsy American to delve into her husband’s own shady dealings. Inevitably, she finds herself drawn deeper and deeper into a potentially hostile and morally corrupt world.
“Georgina is the heroine of the piece,” explains Stiles. “The show takes you into the hidden world of the super-rich. It’s glamorous, it’s unpredictable. All is not what it seems.”
Co-starring are Adrian Lester as an art dealer called Robert Carver, Iwan Rheon, AKA Game Of Thrones’ Ramsay Bolton (boo! Hiss! etc) as one of Constantine’s sons, and Chocolat’s Lena Olin. The latter is Constantine’s ex-wife, Irina, and presumably a key to helping Georgina unlock her dead husband’s murky past.
Co-written by Jordan and Booker Prize winner John Banville, Riviera will be airing in the UK, Ireland and Italy in 2017.
